An Evening with Dubya

Ok so here's the deal.  Former president George W. Bush spoke at UNT last night in the Coliseum to help promote his new book and give his viewpoints on some of the decisions he made as president.  Students received one free ticket to attend.  I attended the event last night which was filled with everything from drama, comedy, acceptance, and inspiration.

The night began for me waiting about 30 minutes trying to get in while security thoroughly searched everybody.  While outside a little bit of comedy and drama took place as I watched a group of protestors protesting Bush speaking last night.  The comedy part came when a bunch of frat guys came with a big sign saying they welcomed Dubya and shouting, “USA USA!”.  Eventually the cops came over and broke up the small quarrel.

Once inside my friend and I were able to find seats and briefly chatted with the people around us about the event.  Once the event started, Bush received a standing ovation that probably would have lasted for a long time had he not motioned to the crowd to sit down.  During his lecture, the president made several jokes in regards to the way Americans painted him as not being smart.  He also made several jokes about life after being president.  More drama and comedy came when in the middle of the event almost a whole row of protestors stood up and began protesting.  President Bush stopped and then remarked after the protestors were escorted out about the value of free speech.  Two more protests broke out during the night, but everyone usually clapped.

Overall, the president delivered a positive message about how having freedom is good in life, how students should ask questions if they do not understand something, the value of being sober in life, and how faith influenced him while president.  It was also good to see why he made some of the decisions he made during his presidency.  One instance was his highly criticized moment on 9/11 when he continued listening to the elementary school student read his book after being informed of attacks.  It was a fun-filled night and I am glad I went.
