The Club Scene at UNT

Despite trying to avoid it for so long, finals are here in full force.  Finals week is an important time for students and the best thing to do for a good grade is study.  To aid in the studying most students will go clubbing during this time.  Currently there are two hot clubs in Denton during finals week.  Almost every student has heard about or has been to at least one of them while attending UNT.

The two hottest clubs during finals week are Club Willis and Club Disco.  Club Willis is four stories tall if you include the basement and has more than enough room to accommodate all of your friends in whatever you’re doing.  The first floor and lower level is open 24 hours a day until December 17 so don’t ever have go home.

Club Disco on the other hand is a small nice place to go to if you’re looking to enjoy a nice and quiet scene.  Club Disco is slowly gaining popularity with the UNT student body but still remains less popular than Club Willis due the driving distance.  A friend and I once went to Club Disco during finals week.  It was nice quiet place and we had a good time hanging out with each other.  One positive about Club Disco that cannot be found at Club Willis is the pool table inside.  It’s a nice game to play if you’re looking to impress your friends with your skills on the pool table.  Club disco stays open 24/7 however some of the rooms close at around 10pm.

By the way, the two hottest clubs I am referring to are UNT's Willis Library or "Club Willis", and Discovery Park or "Club Disco".  These are the nicknames given to both due to the large number of students that are going to be there to study for finals.  I admit college students sometimes do not make the best decisions, but everyone knows you never go partying during finals week.

Wherever you go enjoy yourself because after this week both Club Willis and Club Disco will become like ghost towns since everyone will be going home at the end of the semester.

Good luck with finals!

Taking Away the Stress with Eagle’s Refuge and the Insomnia

It’s approaching end of the semester and the student activities center is offering a little R&R before the great storm also known as FINALS arrives next week.  The student activities center at Discovery Park was offering free massages to students and was also giving out free healthy snacks like fruits, granola bars, and Caprisun fruit drinks. Besides the Eagle’s Refuge that was going on this week, the student activities center is continually making the Discovery Park campus feel more like the UNT campus in the activities that are done in trying to keep students calm, busy, and relaxed while taking a break from schoolwork.
The main campus will also be putting on a similar program on a bigger scale since a lot more students are on the main campus called Eagle Insomnia.  The different activities will range from an oxygen bar, an air brush tattoo station, food and drinks, music, games, and much more!
Despite it being close to finals its good to see UNT making an effort to keep students relaxed at this stressful time.  Finals can be a stressful time for many students since the percentage of the grade that goes towards a final exam is usually large and could drastically affect the students’ grades.  The stress to do well on a test can be overbearing on a student and could possibly cause them to do worse on a final.  That’s why in this time of stress it is good see the university trying to keep students relaxed.  I know that the best way for me to think is when I am in a relaxed state of mind and both the Eagle’s Refuge and Eagle Insomnia helping me stay relaxed.
In regards to finals, relax everyone.  As long as you do what you’re supposed to do and study, everything will be ok. Also be careful with all-nighters.  Back in my freshman year my friend and I were in the same Calculus class.  He pulled an all-nighter the day before the test and showed up almost 1 ½ hours late.  Luckily for him he knew the material and was able to finish the test.

Good luck on finals!

Whoever Make’s us Win

Ok so here’s the deal, this football season at UNT has been hectic.  In October the head football coach Todd Dodge was relieved of his duties after not producing a winning football season in the past three years.  Dodge’s interim head coach was the offensive coordinator Mike Canales who was able to produce a 2-3 record for the remainder of the season.  Along with several injured players and the untimely death of a player, the team has been through a lot this season.

Despite the setbacks, the Mean Green are moving on and have hired Dan McCarney as the new head coach.  At this point in football at UNT, it really does not matter…it’s all about whoever makes us win.  The new coach Dan McCarney has led the different teams he coached under to bowl game appearances including the 2008 Florida Gators.  One notable mention about Dan McCarney is he is known for creating good defenses.  But as I said before, who ever makes us win is all that is important.

Even coach McCarney’s record will not speak for how his performance will turn out.  When Dodge was hired he came in with four 5A State Championships but unfortunately ended with a 6-37 record at UNT.  Charlie Weis was the head coach of Notre Dame and had several losing seasons despite being the offensive coordinator for the Superbowl winning New England Patriots.

Only time will tell whether or not the new football coach turns the stuggling football program around and brings UNT back to the glory it used to be.  But as I said before, whoever makes us win.

Beginning to Look A lot like Christmas

Ok so here’s the deal, the Christmas season has arrived and not a moment too soon.  Christmas is my favorite time of the year.  I am ready to see all of my favorite Christmas movies: How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, A Christmas Story, Bad Santa, Elf, Trading Places, It’s a Wonderful Life, and of course the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.  I also cannot wait to start playing all the Christmas music stored on my Ipod.

I see a lot people in my apartment complex putting lights on their balconies and some even have a Christmas tree displayed through their apartment window.  It’s amazing to see how many people are decorating their apartment for the holidays.  This is my first apartment and I cannot wait to decorate it!  I went to Walmart the other day to pick up some decorations for my apartment.  I plan on going to Target this weekend to buy a few more decorations for the holiday season.  If I am lucky, I might be able to find a nice little Charlie Brown Christmas Tree to put in my apartment.

Though the Christmas season is here with all the joy and love that it brings, there is still one more demon that I have to fight before I can truly enjoy the holidays. (FINALS)

Exams are coming up in two weeks and most professors are starting to get to the end of the material they are supposed to teach us.  Hopefully the finals will be fast and painless as possible.

Well, time to play Luther Vandross’ “Every Year Every Christmas” on my Ipod and finish the final project for my lab class.

Fout’s Field Finale “Thanks for the Memories”

Ok so here’s the deal.  This past Saturday, the UNT football team played its final game at Fouts Field.  Next year, the mean green will open their season in a new stadium which is currently being built across Interstate 35.  The new stadium is expected to bring high hopes for the football team and the school which include having an energy efficient stadium that is Gold LEED certified to aid in the University’s goal of going green, possibly moving to a higher NCAA conference, and possibly recruiting better players to aid a struggling football team.

Though changing to a larger stadium is probably for the best, Fouts Field will always hold a lot of good and bad memories for the time I have been at UNT.  Some of the good memories I will always remember are the tailgating before the game started and hanging out with friends and family at the game to cheer on UNT.  Despite the many losses that came to the football team, the game always brought something to do on the weekend.  Some of the bad memories that I will always have are all the close football games that UNT lost at Fouts Field (which are a lot of close games), and the one time I could have but did not rush the field for UNT winning a home game.

I hope this new stadium will bring new and lasting memories for all the students for the future to come.  Farewell Fouts.

How to Handle the TSA during the Thanksgiving Break

OK so here’s the deal, it’s the Thanksgiving Break.  This is a time when students get a few days to take a break from school before going back to prepare for finals.  During this time, a lot of people will be traveling home to be with their families.  While the break is a good time to not think about anything, some issues should be addressed regarding the TSA: Turkey, Sleeping, and Adjusting your belt for the Thanksgiving break.
In regards to Turkey, for a student it is probably the best meal they will get due to the fact it does not involve making boiling Ramen.  Any meal that does not involve Ramen is good and should be cherished as much as possible.  Enjoy all the turkey and side dishes during the break.
In regards to Sleeping, eating the turkey and side dishes helps when it comes to sleeping.  Sleep as much as you can because it will be last good sleep you get before finals week.
In regards to Adjusting your belt, that simply means to repeat eating turkey and sleeping as much as possible.  As I said before, after the Thanskgiving break, its pretty much studying for finals.
So good luck on the break and enjoy it as much as you can.

One Missed Game

Ok so here's the deal last Tuesday the Mean Green basketball team took on Texas Tech University.  I remembered about the event when I got back to my apartment that night but declined to go since I was kind of tired after being at school the whole day in class and in lab.  That was the biggest mistake I probably could have ever made.  This is probably one of those games that will always be talked about forever in UNT history.  The Mean Green took the game into overtime where they beat Texas Tech 92-83.  After the Mean Green won, the fans rushed the court to congratulate the players on a job well done.  Even though it has been a few days since the game was played, people are still talking about how good the game was.  All I can do is sigh and regret how I did not go to the game.

The expectations are high for the Mean Green basketball team which won the Sunbelt Conference Championship last year and made it to the NCAA Tournament where they were knocked out by Kansas in the first round.  The Mean Green is expected to win the Sunbelt Conference Championship again this year and possibly go further in the NCAA tournament.  Having our basketball team go far in the tournament would be great publicity for our school.

After hearing about the exciting win UNT had last Tuesday against Texas Tech, I will do my best to try and make the next basketball game at the Super Pit.  Hopefully the game will have the same dramatic finish as it did in the Texas Tech game.

An Evening with Dubya

Ok so here's the deal.  Former president George W. Bush spoke at UNT last night in the Coliseum to help promote his new book and give his viewpoints on some of the decisions he made as president.  Students received one free ticket to attend.  I attended the event last night which was filled with everything from drama, comedy, acceptance, and inspiration.

The night began for me waiting about 30 minutes trying to get in while security thoroughly searched everybody.  While outside a little bit of comedy and drama took place as I watched a group of protestors protesting Bush speaking last night.  The comedy part came when a bunch of frat guys came with a big sign saying they welcomed Dubya and shouting, “USA USA!”.  Eventually the cops came over and broke up the small quarrel.

Once inside my friend and I were able to find seats and briefly chatted with the people around us about the event.  Once the event started, Bush received a standing ovation that probably would have lasted for a long time had he not motioned to the crowd to sit down.  During his lecture, the president made several jokes in regards to the way Americans painted him as not being smart.  He also made several jokes about life after being president.  More drama and comedy came when in the middle of the event almost a whole row of protestors stood up and began protesting.  President Bush stopped and then remarked after the protestors were escorted out about the value of free speech.  Two more protests broke out during the night, but everyone usually clapped.

Overall, the president delivered a positive message about how having freedom is good in life, how students should ask questions if they do not understand something, the value of being sober in life, and how faith influenced him while president.  It was also good to see why he made some of the decisions he made during his presidency.  One instance was his highly criticized moment on 9/11 when he continued listening to the elementary school student read his book after being informed of attacks.  It was a fun-filled night and I am glad I went.

UNT Alumnus Responsible for Insomnia Causing Drug

Alright so here’s the deal, there’s a new drug on the market that was designed by a UNT alumnus.  The drug has swept the nation and has a dangerous effect of causing people to get insomnia.  If you want to know what drug I am talking about, I am referring to the new Call of Duty: Black Ops game that came out on November 8.  The new Call of Duty game sold almost 5.6 million copies for $360 million dollars on the first day.  The release of the Call of Duty will cause several students to buy the game and stay up all night trying to pass the game or play multiplayer on Xbox live.  Several students will begin by saying I will only play 5 minutes.  Eventually the 5 minutes becomes 1 hour, then 2 hours, and eventually the entire night.

One of the game designers, Cesar Stastny, was computer science major at UNT who is responsible for the design, production, and public relations of the Call of Duty Black Ops game.  While the problem for this oh so addicting game should go to Stastny, part of the blame should be given to the current interim chair Dr. Ian Parberry who has been creating gamer students in his LARC lab since 1993.  Dr. Ian Parberry has created students that have gone on to write their own books, start their own business, and hold senior-level positions at the top gaming industries.  Dr. Parberry has also increased his efforts to create more gamers by allowing the Princeton Review to name his program the Top 50 best institutions for studying game design.

So be careful with the Call of Duty Black Ops game to not become addicted.  I myself am only going to play 5 minutes of the game…

“The Evolution of a Friendship at DP”, Words From a Philosopher

Ok so here’s the deal, along with engineering courses that I have to take this semester, I also have to take a course in philosophy to satisfy the core university requirement of a humanities credit.  While I thought philosophy was going to be a boring course that tried to change my religious beliefs, it has actually turned into a very interesting and challenging course.  While some of the lectures do seem kind of pointless such as if you put your hand in front of your face and close your eyes how do you know its there, other lectures invoke thought such as what is justice or what is a friend.  In the philosophy course we read Plato’s book to get a better understanding of what is a friend.  One major detail that I got out of reading Plato is that a friendship starts out of goodwill and usually stems from a common interest.

Reading this in Plato made think of a lot of the friendships I developed at Discovery Park.  Most of the friends I have made at Discovery Park stemmed from either goodwill or the common interest being in the same class.

From that common interest of being in the same class, our friendship evolved in working with each other on homework and projects.  From there, we learned that we shared a lot more common interests, such as going to the same church and being involved in the same fraternal organization.

I am glad I have these friends and think of how we probably never would have met if we did not share a common interest of taking the same classes at Discovery Park.

A word of advice to all you engineering students or potential students at Discovery Park, make as many friends as possible whether it stem from goodwill or sharing a common interest.

You never know how much can evolve from the word Hi.

UNT Football

Alright so here’s the deal, at UNT there are almost 500 student organizations.  One such professional student organization that I am involved with is the National Society of Black Engineers or NSBE.  Recently I agreed to attend a Dallas Metroplex meeting for NSBE in which other chapters around the Dallas Fort-Worth Area meet.  By chance the meeting happens to fall on the same night that the UNT football team is playing another home game. This puts me at kind of being disappointed right now because I would really much like to go to the game.  If someone was to read this blog, they would probably ask if I was crazy because UNT has not had a winning football team in the past four seasons.  But despite our not so winning record, I always do my best to attend the football games.  Football at college is one of the best experiences you will ever have.  It offers a chance to go tailgating before the game, get free food from the different tents, play games, and overall have fun during the weekend.  No matter how hard we lose, the fun experience of being at football game, hanging out with friends, and hoping that UNT might win always turn me back to it.
So as I drive to the Dallas Metroplex meeting for NSBE, I hope everyone takes advantage of good times you have going to college football games while in college because once it’s over, it’s over.

WARNING: DUE DATES AND TEST ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween weekend.

Alright so here’s the deal, the semester is starting to draw to a close.  The second wave of tests and class projects are coming up within the next few weeks.  As tests and projects are nearing, several college students and I will wave off studying for tests or starting a project until the night before the test or the night the project is due.

When it comes to tests and projects the worst thing someone could say is, “I will get started on it tomorrow, I promise”.  The reason this expression is terrible is because it always starts a daily cycle in which you tell yourself that you will start tomorrow, but you never come through and eventually you finally start studying for the test or working on the project the night before.  I have seen a countless number of friends stressed or on the verge of falling asleep after pulling an all nighter to finish a project or study for a test.

I know that I am guilty of waiting till the last minute to finish a project or study for a test.  I have however seen the light and the benefit of not waiting till the last minute to study for tests and do projects.

The main pro about studying for a test and working on a project prior to the day before is that it’s less stressful and you receive a much better grade in the end.

So make a promise to yourself to no longer wait until the last minute to study for a test or complete a project.

So in regards to my test next Wednesday and my project due in two weeks, I will start working on them TODAY, I promise!

All Work and No Play Makes a Student Dull

Due to it being Halloween, its time for a scary story.

It was a clear and breezy night.  A young man in college had locked himself in his dorm room so he could study.  The man studied day and night never taking a break from studying.  He did it every night until…

He became the most dullest person in the world!!!

Now they say whenever he roams the Earth you can hear his monotone voice.  As soon as you hear his voice, the force is too much and you are asleep in seconds. (Boogidie Boogidie Boo)

Alright I may not be the best scary story teller, but the story does rein truth.  Even though the main reason to go to college is to get an education, you must also learn to find a balance between school work and recreational time.  While studying is good, too much studying can lead to a boring and dull life.  While having recreational time is good, too much of it can cause a hindrance in school work.  The best way to make sure that you will always have time to work and play is to learn to manage your time wisely.

College is the best time of your life so live it up.  After college comes job and family responsibility. You will never have the same freedom as you did when you were in college.

So have fun this Halloween weekend and go to a party or hangout with friends.  I myself will be going to my friend's party tonight.  Just be sure to always be in control and be responsible.

And if you guys really want a scary story, I tell you the time when my Grandma got out of the tub.

Now that’s scary!

Happy Halloween and...

All Busy at UNT

Alright so here’s deal, usually to get to Discovery Park, I take the bus to help save on gas money and mainly being cheap.  Usually I take the bus from my apartment to the main campus and from the main campus to Discovery Park.  This past Monday as I was getting off the bus from my apartment to the main campus, I was able to get a whiff of the student protest of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws or (NORML).  At this time they were protesting the laws regarding marijuana at UNT and in the nation.  Despite the walking protest, this is the normal happenings at the main campus.  Usually there are several student groups that come out each week trying to handout information and express their views on current events.  Along with school work, students usually join student organizations and the university will sometimes have events to keep students busy outside of the classroom.  On Tuesday there was free popcorn, candy, and games at Discovery Park which was pretty fun to be at while I was waiting for my next class.  As you can see life at UNT and Discovery Park stays pretty busy outside of the classroom through student organizations and on-campus events.

The Battle of the Engineering Degree

Ok so here’s the deal.  Every week I have a lab class I have to be enrolled in for my major.  Usually the lab will start at a certain time and all the groups will be there to begin doing the specified lab of the week.  This week however the lab class had to start almost thirty minutes late.  A majority of the other people in the lab are enrolled in another upper-level engineering class and they all have it at the same time.  Apparently a lot of people were distraught over the results of a quiz and stayed till the end of class and past it to argue with the teacher.  Due to this blog being family oriented I will leave out the dirty details.

This is expected in the battle for an engineering degree.  If I could explain how to get an engineering degree I would classify it in three waves.  The first wave is the beginning of the college experience in which students are taking fairly simple classes that do not involve their major courses.  If they are taking a course in their major, most likely it is not a hard course.  The biggest obstacle in the first wave is adjusting from college life and being away from home.

The second wave brings about classes which first involve taking classes which are prerequisites to your major.  These classes carry a level of difficulty in which a certain amount of commitment is needed for the classes. At this point more students begin switching their major to something else.

The third and final wave brings a majority of the courses in your engineering major.  It is in these classes that the knowledge that you gained from the previous course sections are used in every way possible.  The difficulty is based on how it tries to tie together all the knowledge you have learned in the past three years to what you are studying

After the three waves, the gate to the engineering degree is accessible because the only classes that remain are project classes.

So for my fellow engineering majors currently stuck in the third wave of the battle of the engineering degree, good luck and stick out till the end.
